Ignorance Personified *Warning: Strong Language*

I am in awe right now. I cannot believe how rude and disrespectful people can be to perfect strangers especially when attempting to conduct an exchange of goods for money. You would think there would be a slightly higher level of 'customer service'. The funny thing about this interaction (well there are multiple things) is that my friend was attempting to get information about a laptop and at some point along the way there was a severe breakdown in communication.

For the less tech savvy readers here is a quick background on laptop resolutions: They are a measurement of the amount of pixels across the screen by the amount of pixels down the screen. So, when someone asks what the resolution of your laptop is you would give them the highest possible setting available in order to show how good your product is. In the email that follows the seller mentions that his resolution is 1024 x 768 which is really low relative to what is available these days. A standard screen resolution could go up to 1600 x 1200 which makes a large difference. It is possible to set your resolution according to your preference but not all laptops let you set it very high.

Below is the email conversation between Jesse and Kevin:

Is the dell D610 still available?
Where are you located?
What is the screen resolution?

resolution can be set to higher or lower, so is all about to set it up, $320.00 is way to cheap, i know the market and this laptop on e-bay for over $400.00 for such like new clean conditions, so i know what i got, NO LESS THAN $370.00!!

Its going for $260-$300 on ebay. I think $320 is fair, especially with the screen resolution being so low. Let me know if you change your mind. --Kevin

Um, ok, so, laptops have a maximum screen resolution, and yours is 1024x768.
I prevoiusly bought 2 others on craiglist for 300 each, same specs as yours but higher resolution versions, so please don't tell me I don't know the market.
Have a good day.

Here is when is takes an odd turn, why couldn't Jesse just tell Kevin what the highest setting was rather than simply stating there was one and resorting to such confusing attacks:

Wow, that Kevin guy is a bit of a jerk.
A free market means you don't have to buy products. Rather than walk away and buy on ebay, he subjected the seller to harassment.
I think my language would have been far less professional.... OR..... even better, I would have offered to sell it, then when he got there we would have a 'conversation'.

Yeah, unfortunately, I've got to agree with the previous poster. If you don't like the deal that's offered, find another. Don't badger some guy who is obviously not going to come down to the price you want. Man up & move on. It's actually quite pathetic that you then had to come on here & whine about it. I'm not saying you're a SHIT HEAD FAG. Whiny little bitch would be more like it. Piss off!

Aside from all of that, it sounds like the seller was confusing the Current screen resolution and the request for the Maximum screen resolution.

Just an unnecessary escalation of something which is probably just the difference between an OS setting and the hardware specs.

Oh, and: English Fail.

What I thought was really interesting is how the seller went directly to personal attacks and name calling.

He could have just said no thanks, and been a bit more professional.

I took me about 2 seconds to find out that particular laptop to have a 1400x1050 pixel maximum resolution screen.

I see you rewrote the article after you told everyone not to buy from him and gave out his email addy.
Classy.

Kevin & idreamincode have reading comprehension problems, the guy told him all the info he intended to give & the price he wanted. Then advises him to piss off & he still emailed him again. Deserved every angry word.

Yes I did delete his email address, I didn't think this was going to be on reddit when I wrote it and agree it was wrong of me to include it in the first place.

Just email him from an another email address. Agree to meet him to buy the item. Either stand him up and waste his time or be there and just punch him in the face. Either way you will feel better. Life is too short to take crap from random people. Sometimes you gotta fix people 1 by 1. Or just do nothing and I'm sure it will happen again.

Wow...wow...Kevin you did nothing wrong...that guys is a douchebag.

Wow.

Well, it seems the buyer could have been more clear and say what is the "maximum" resolution and not say that the current setting is "low" (and use that as the bargaining leverage). The seller did say it could be set higher (or lower).

Nothing in this exchange called for Jesse to spend over half the last message calling Kevin names. Those are fightin' words!

the problem is the anonymity of the web. this interaction would have been more civil if conducted in person. in person it would have been clear that jesse is just another of these wee little nerd ass punks hiding behind a screen. so many punks, so few men.

I completely agree with you that the anonymity of the internet gives people the ability to say and do things they wouldn't in person. Not only proven by Jesse in the exchange I posted, but also exemplified by the above comments where I was put down on a personal level as well. An interesting social experiment...

why not continue to offer the guy a lower price. If you don't think it's worth more than $320, you can keep reminding the seller that, if it doesn't sell for the asking price and they decide to accept less, you're there with your offer. The seller obviously didn't understand that there was a limit to the resolution and would only say "you can set it higher" instead of giving the proper information.

Crazy people should be left alone. After his third reply was typed in ALL CAPS he is officially deemed crazy. Although he does sound like an eight year old spewing senseless and random profanities in the last post.

DizzyG said...

That's kind of funny how crazy the seller went but I have to say, a 60 second look at dell.com would have got you all of the specs on that machine. The Seller obviously didn't know the answer and got hostile, but you could have found it yourself!

idreamincode said...

"The Seller obviously didn't know the answer and got hostile, but you could have found it yourself!"

Unfortunately, no, I could not find out the answer. The monitors come in 2 flavors, the low res 1024x768 (XGA) and the hi-res versions with 1400x1050 SXGA+.

There is a difference. No way to change the max resolution after you buy it.

Ignore the naysayers here. They're obviously of the same ilk as this seller.

I think you should post the seller's email address, then we could show him what REAL harassment is.
